Costa Vicentina: 5 days to discover the hidden beauties of Alentejo's coast

Share
Rich in biodiversity, the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e costa vicentina delights all its visitors with its idyllic landscapes, the quietness of a hidden Algarve and Alentejo and the most beautiful Portuguese beaches.

That's why we've created a 5-day tour, so you can explore the most well-known places, but also those that are waiting for an opportunity to make themselves known.

A trip with Guerin along the costa vicentina

According to the Portuguese Tourist Board, the costa vicentina is located along the Alentejo coast up to the Algarve region, where nature is still well preserved and has a strong and wild character, which translates into landscapes of unique magnificence.

The route of costa vicentina takes us along a length of approximately 110 km, which includes territories of the districts of Beja, Faro and Setúbal. It covers a total of 4 municipalities: Aljezur and Vila do Bispo (Faro), Sines (Setúbal) and Odemira (Beja).

Few people imagine that a destination like this is so close to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, but the truth is that it is only 150 km away that this adventure begins, in Sines and will only end in Sagres.

Costa Vicentina: places to visit

As we revealed in our article on "Best Holiday Destinations in Portugal with Beach" (link mais tarde), Portugal is privileged to receive over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, making it a destination of choice for those who enjoy a trip at any time of the year.

So, there's nothing like mapping out a route along the costa vicentina by season, as there's much more than beaches waiting for you. Start by renting a car with Guerin, as the places to explore depend on the autonomy a car gives you.

Costa Vicentina: 1st Day Itinerary

Sines

The largest city on the Alentejo coast allows you to enjoy adventure in the city or opt for the beach. It was here that the navigator Vasco da Gama was born, and the historic centre holds some surprises for you. Explore the areas of Largo do Muro da Praia, Largo Poeta Bocage and Largo do Castelo, where you will find the Mother Church, the Misericórdia Chapel, and the Sines Castle, with museums inside. Take a leap to the Largo dos Penedos da Índia, with an incredible panoramic view over the bay.

Praia de São Torpes

There is no costa vicentina without a trip to the beach. So, if you wish to have an experimental surfing lesson, the waves of this beach are sought after for their safety for those who wish to explore the sport. It is on this beach that you will find the warmest waters in mainland Portugal, perfect for a dip!

Praia da Samoqueira

If you are a photography lover, this is an obligatory stop on the costa vicentina for you! Samoqueira beach conquers by its natural beauty, with transparent waters and cliffs that protect it and give you access to countless caves and natural pools.

Porto Covo

The village immortalised by the Rui Veloso song, awaits you with its typical houses painted white and blue. Follow the path that will take you to the sea and enjoy the unique landscape of the bay of Porto Covo. The most famous island of the whole costa vicentina is only a short distance away, so take your car and drive to Praia da Ilha, where you will have a privileged view of it, as well as access to the Forte da Nossa Senhora da Queimada. In summer, you can make the boat crossing and visit the ruins of Forte de Santo Alberto, which can be found on the island.

Vila Nova de Milfontes

Visit the streets of the historic centre, where you will find the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça and the Fort of São Clemente. On the banks of the river Mira, you will find the Franquia beach and if you follow the waterfront, you will arrive at the lighthouse. Take the opportunity to enjoy the various terraces with a beautiful view.

Cascata de Vila Nova de Milfontes

About 10 km from Vila Nova de Milfontes, you can find the "Rocha de Água de Alto” waterfall, which with the rains turns this rock into a waterfall almost 30 metres high. You will have to walk about 2.5 km to see it and it is dependent on the volume of water at that time of the year.

Costa Vicentina: 2nd Day Itinerary

Praia das Furnas

Winner of the 7 Wonders of Portugal - Beaches contest, this beach looks like something out of a film: transparent sea, fine sand, dunes, and a unique wild environment.

Praia de Almograve

If you enjoy a good walk, explore the 8.5 km long Almograve Dunes Trail. Nearby, you can visit the fishing port of Lapa de Pombas.

Cabo Sardão

Discover the most western point of the Alentejo coast, with its impressive lighthouse and even more breathtaking views from the cliff top. It is known to be a favourite destination for storks and the only place on the coast where they build their nests.

Trilho dos Pescadores

If you want to take a few hours off the beaches, there's nothing like heading for another of the trails of the costa vicentina. This section of the Vicentine Route connects Cabo Sardão to Zambujeira do Mar, over 10 km.

Zambujeira do Mar

Hosts one of the best-known summer music festivals, but it is for the beach that it has become famous: the great cliff protects us from the wind and allows us a unique panoramic view.

Odemira

On the banks of the river Mira, you will find this village, where you can enjoy the views from the belvedere of the old castle, enjoy the streets of the castle quarter, visit the garden of Fonte Férrea, but also discover the several churches in the centre of the village and the famous Odemira Windmill.

Costa Vicentina: 3rd Day Itinerary

Pego das Pias

A walk of about 2 km will lead you to this natural secret. You will find not only peculiar rocks along the way, but also several natural lakes, thanks to the waters of the Ribeira do Torgal. The woods are perfect for a family picnic.

Barragem de Santa Clara

If you are tired of the beach but not of water, this dam may be the perfect alternative. Here you can practice various water sports and even rent your own boat. Next door is the beautiful village of Santa Clara-a-Velha, one of the finalists of the "7 Wonders of Portugal - Riverside Villages".

Praia da Amália

Named this way as a tribute to the fado singer Amália Rodrigues since it was one of the artist's favourite destinations and where we still find her house today. Besides the beautiful beach, you will also find the murals that were dedicated to the singer, in the village of Brejão.

Praia de Odeceixe

We finally arrived in the Algarve! This beach was the winner of the "7 Wonders of Portugal - Cliff Beach", and these are the cliffs that protect this little paradise and allow us an incredible panoramic view over the beach.

Aljezur

With its Moorish influences, this is without a doubt an obligatory stop of the whole costa vicentina. Among whitewashed houses, to the old and narrow streets, climb up to one of the castles represented in the Portuguese flag and enjoy the view over the Aljezur plain, the Monchique mountains and the sea.

Costa Vicentina: 4th Day Itinerary

Praia da Carreagem

Don't be alarmed if when you reach the walkway leading to the beach you cannot see the sand. The descent down the cliff is not for everyone, but it gives you access to one of the most beautiful beaches on the whole costa vicentina and where nature is still strongly represented.

Praia de Monte Clérigo and Praia da Arrifana

In Monte Clérigo you will find a fishing village that takes you back in time, with its small white houses and brightly coloured doors. But at Praia da Arrifana get ready to venture into some waves. Here you can find several spots for surfing.

Bordeira

Leave the coast and visit another nearby village. Bordeira is a typical Algarve village, with narrow alleys and its houses that don't let us fool ourselves about the region. The typical chimneys, the church of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação and even the old castle from which today only the incredible view remains. Next door, we return to the sea and the beach with the same name as the village. The beach is one of the longest and where the Bordeira Stream flows into, ideal for kitesurfers.

Pontal da Carrapateira

Do you like a good sunset? Then visit Pontal da Carrapateira, where a viewpoint has been set up on the cliff top to enjoy it in all its splendour. Take the opportunity to do the Pontal da Carrapateira Trail, ideal for the whole family. It has a total length of 11 km but is worth all the foot pains afterwards.

Praia do Amado

On one of the cliffs known as Ponta do Castelo, between Praia do Portinho do Forno, and Praia do Amado, you can find what remains of the ruins of an old Islamic fishing village. The views are incredible.

Aldeia da Pedralva

Rebuilt a few years ago, this small village has gained new charm. It has kept the typical features of Algarve villages, with narrow streets, but which make us daydream. Ideal for some good photos.

Costa Vicentina: 5th Day Itinerary

Praia do Castelejo

Climb to the top of the beach to discover a good part of the impressive coastal cliffs. Here you will find the Miradouro do Castelejo and you will know you are in the Algarve when the colour of the cliffs changes from reddish to a golden colour typical of the Algarve coast.

Vila do Bispo

Almost finishing your tour of the costa vicentina, we come across this village where you can find a bit of everything. There is the Cordoama Trail, with 15 or 10 km, but also the fishing villages of Burgau and Salema, with their colourful fishing boats and where you can eat the best, freshly caught fish. Close by you will find the remains of the Almádena Fortress and you can choose to go snorkelling at Praia da Ingrina. If you like history, then you should visit the Bateria do Zavial and the Ermida de Guadalupe, as well as the Menir do Padrão.

Sagres

You can't miss the well-known Sagres Fortress, the westernmost fortress in Portugal and mainland Europe. Discover the Rosa dos Ventos and the impressive landscapes.

Cabo de São Vicente

We finish the costa vicentina route in a magical place. Watch the sunset at Cape St Vincent, the place where the Romans once worshipped the god Saturn and discover the Fortaleza do Beliche.
