São João do Porto 2026: the complete guide to traditions, fireworks and how to get there.
São João do Porto is one of the city’s most iconic nights of the year - and also one of the busiest. With packed streets, festivities that run until dawn, music, grilled sardines and the famous plastic hammers, Porto turns into one huge open-air street party.
This São João do Porto 2026 guide brings together everything you need to plan the night: the main traditions, what to do, the best spots to watch the fireworks, where to eat and (very importantly) how to get there and park without hassle.
What is São João do Porto (and why is it so famous)?
Unlike other cities, in Porto, São Joãol is celebrated mainly in the streets. It is a festival that attracts hundreds of thousands of people: families, friends and visitors gather downtown (Baixa), in Ribeira, around Aliados and along the Douro to celebrate. The night of 23 to 24 June blends tradition with a popular street festival, featuring basil pots (manjericos), leeks, sardines, music and an atmosphere that lasts until sunrise.
What Are the Traditions of São João in Porto (and What Shouldn’t You Miss)?
Traditions are at the heart of São João in Porto and help explain why the night is lived so intensely in the streets. From curious objects to flavors that are already part of our collective memory, there are elements that repeat year after year; things almost everyone wants to try at least once. Discover what we’re talking about.

Plastic hammers (yes, you’re meant to tap people!).
The plastic toy hammers have become a modern symbol of São João. The tradition is to give friendly little "taps” to strangers and friends alike, always with respect and good humour.
Leeks and basil pots with rhymes.
Leeks and basil pots (manjericos) are part of the festival’s imagery. The basil pots often come with traditional rhymes and are one of the most popular items to give as a gift or keep as a souvenir.
Sardines, caldo verde and bifanas.
Food is central to the experience. Grilled sardines, caldo verde (kale soup) and bifanas (pork sandwiches) are classic choices, especially at street parties. As the central areas get extremely crowded, it’s often worth eating earlier or choosing less congested streets.
What to Do During São João in Porto in 2026?
A great night starts with a simple plan: arrive early, choose an area to stay in, and decide how you’ll get back.
A simple plan for the night (from sunset to sunrise).
- Late afternoon: a stroll through Baixa and the first street parties.
- Evening: music, socialising, and street food.
- Midnight: fireworks over the Douro (typical time).
- Early hours: keep partying or head back calmly, avoiding the biggest departure rush.
Where the action is: the most popular areas.
- Baixa / Aliados: packed streets, a more urban vibe and plenty of entertainment.
- Ribeira: an iconic setting by the Douro.
- Douro riverbanks (Porto and Gaia): highly sought-after areas for watching the fireworks.
- Higher areas and viewpoints: a good alternative if you prefer fewer crowds.

São João fireworks in Porto: the best places to watch.
The highlight of the celebrations is usually the fireworks display, typically at midnight. To ensure a good view, it’s best to choose your spot in advance.
Ribeira and the Douro riverfront.
Ribeira is one of the city’s most emblematic areas and therefore one of the most popular. If you choose this spot, expect slow exits after the fireworks.
Luís I Bridge (and crossings).
A very popular viewing point. Crowds can be heavy, so it’s recommended to arrive early and keep an eye on any circulation restrictions.
Gaia (the opposite bank).
Many visitors prefer the Gaia riverfront for the view and, in some areas, for a slightly more comfortable experience.
Viewpoints and higher areas.
Elevated areas can offer wide views over the Douro, making them a great alternative if you want to avoid the biggest crowds.
How to Get to São João in Porto in 2026?
Traffic and parking are the biggest challenges on this night. But with a mobility plan, you can reduce delays and avoid frustration.
Avoid driving into the city centre.
On São João night, the historic centre, Aliados, Ribeira and the bridge access roads usually have closures and restrictions. Even when entry is possible, parking is very difficult. We recommend leaving your car outside the busiest areas and using public transport (or walking).
Where to park: think "outside the centre” and use public transport.
The most efficient option is to park in outlying areas and then take the metro or bus, or walk, depending on your plans. One option is the Estádio do Dragão metro station, which has a car park and special prices for metro users.
Where to Eat During São João in Porto?
Street food is part of the festival - but it’s also where the longest queues form. To make the most of it, follow these tips:
Eat early (or split the night into "two stops”).
- More relaxed: have dinner between 7pm and 8pm, then head to the street parties.
- More "São João”: snack throughout the night (sardines, bifana, caldo verde), avoiding huge queues in one single place.
We also recommend bringing some cash in small notes/coins, as not all stalls accept card payments and queues move faster.
What’s "classic” on the night.
- Grilled sardines (the gastronomic symbol)
- Caldo verde (comfort in a bowl)
- Bifanas / pão com chouriço (quick and practical)
- Farturas and fairground sweets (to end the night)
How to Enjoy the Night Without Any Hassle?
- Arrive early and choose your area before it becomes "impenetrable”.
- Agree a meeting point (and a Plan B) with your group.
- Bring an extra layer: even in June, it can get cooler by the river at night.
- Comfortable shoes: you’ll walk a lot.
- Avoid taking your car into the centre: the party is better when you’re not thinking about parking.
- Pick an "exit point” outside the busiest area so you can head back with less hassle.
Hiring a car for São João do Porto: when does it make sense?
Even if the best strategy on the night is to avoid driving into the centre, there are many situations where our rented cars are genuinely useful. For example, if you:
- are coming from outside Porto and want to road-trip around the North (Braga, Guimarães, the Douro Valley, etc.)
- are staying in outlying areas and want more flexibility with timings
- are travelling in a group and prefer to split costs.
With Guerin, you can pick up your car easily and plan your arrival in advance. The trick is to use the car as support outside the centre, not as a "door-to-door” option on São João night.
You can also add our complementary products to your booking:
- Additional driver: so you can share the driving with a friend;
- GPS: essential for finding alternative routes during the road closures and diversions typical of São João in Porto;
- Glass and Wheel Protection: to protect against the city’s narrow streets, makeshift parking spaces and heavy foot traffic;
- Platinum Pack: a more comprehensive protection solution, designed for those seeking maximum peace of mind and risk management.
If you’re already planning your trip, secure the essentials now (accommodation and transport) and let the rest happen: in São João do Porto, part of the magic is simply letting yourself get a little lost among the street parties.
