Visit Lamego: a guide to discovering the city and the Douro

Located in the Viseu district, around 106 km from Porto and just 12 km from the banks of the Douro, it is an ideal stop for travellers looking to experience a more authentic side of Portugal. Places to visit in Lamego
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is the city’s most iconic landmark and a natural place to start. Perched above Lamego, it is known for its monumental staircase and sweeping views across the city. Take your time on the way up, stop to admire the details and leave a few minutes to enjoy the viewpoint at the top.
From here, head towards the historic centre. Lamego Cathedral, whose construction began in the 12th century, brings together architectural elements from different periods, from Romanesque to Baroque. Just a few minutes away, you will find Lamego Castle, standing at the highest point of the city.
Another important cultural stop is the Lamego Museum, founded in 1917 and housed in the former Episcopal Palace. Its varied collection includes paintings, tapestries, furniture, gold and silverwork, religious vestments and historic means of transport. The museum is currently closed for renovation work, so check whether it has reopened before your visit.
If you have time, wander through the streets of the historic centre, step inside its churches and convents and seek out the viewpoints around the city. Lamego is best explored at an unhurried pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop and sample local produce along the way.
Which festivals and traditions are really worth experiencing?
The Pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is the highlight of Lamego’s local calendar. During the festivities, the city becomes even more lively, with music, parades, religious processions and busy streets.
September also coincides with the grape harvest at many estates across the Douro. This makes it an excellent time to combine a visit to Lamego with a stay in wine country, vineyard experiences and visits to some of the region’s traditional quintas.
Some places are best discovered through their food, and Lamego is one of them. Bôla de Lamego is one of the city’s best known specialities, a traditional savoury bread that can be filled with ingredients such as cured ham, meat or salt cod.
When is the best time to visit Lamego?
Spring and autumn are excellent choices if you prefer milder temperatures and want to explore the region at a more relaxed pace. In early autumn, the grape harvest brings renewed energy to the vineyards and wine estates.
Between August and September, Lamego hosts the Pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. It is a fascinating time to visit and experience one of the city’s most important traditions, although you should expect larger crowds and plan parking, accommodation and travel arrangements in advance.
Winter is quieter and can be a good choice for travellers who want to focus on local food, heritage and a slower pace.
What to do around Lamego?
A visit to Lamego fits easily into a wider journey through the Douro. Just 12 km from the river, the city is well placed for continuing towards Régua, Pinhão or the wine estates and viewpoints scattered across the region.
