Visit Braga: 8 unmissable places

Praça da República

The Praça da República, right in front of the Arcada, a building with several arches that used to house merchants and today gives way to the famous café Vianna. Initially it was just one of the many squares in the city, located outside the old medieval walls. Nowadays, concerts and open-air events often take place in this square.

Rua de Souto

Starting at Avenida Central and ending at Arco da Porta Nova, the famous Rua de Souto runs through the entire historical area of Braga. The most traditional shopping street in Braga is also exclusively pedestrianized. So you can simultaneously shop and enjoy every detail of Braga's historic center.

Largo do Paço

Situated in the historic center and flanked to the south by one of the most important streets of Braga, the Largo do Paço consists of a set of buildings that, in other times, formed the old residence of the Archbishops, known as Paço Episcopal Bracarense. Nowadays, the construction is considered a Property of Public Interest.

Arco da Porta Nova

Located at the end of Rua do Souto, the Arco da Porta Nova is today one of the great symbols of the city. It was ordered built in 1512 by Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa, who was also responsible for works such as the Arcada or the head of the Cathedral. Some say that because it never had a door, it is the origin of the expression: "Are you from Braga?" - when someone leaves the door open.

Museum of Image

Right next to the Arco da Porta Nova, Braga's Museum of Image has a lot to show us. Besides the spectacular photographic exhibitions, which allow you to see the evolution of photography and the city, you can also see the interior of one of the towers of the old wall. A free and unforgettable experience.

Santa Bárbara Garden

With flowerbeds that never lose their beautiful color, the Santa Bárbara Garden is one of the most beautiful in Braga. The important role of those who interrupt the sequence of cement and brick constructions, makes it even more unique. Used by many as a kind of refuge that takes us to take a break and disconnect from reality.

Sé Catedral

So old that it originated the expression: "Older than Braga's Cathedral". An imposing construction, with two large towers that elevate it from the neighboring houses. The parallel streets are good for exploring a little more of the city, without a defined direction. One of the Cathedral's chapels houses the tombs of the parents of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. When night falls, the square becomes even more special, without the noise of the crowd and traffic, the sound of water from the fountain stands out.

Bom Jesus Sanctuary

The fountains and the baroque statues, together with the oldest funicular in the world and the endless staircase, make the Bom Jesus of Braga one of the favorite destinations of the people of Braga and its visitors. But if there are still doubts that this sanctuary is a mandatory stop, the extensive gardens and the admirable lake will put an end to any such uncertainties. Choose the car that will set off with you to discover it and don't waste any more time.
In every corner, you will certainly find a place where you will be well received and served. There is no lack of options for overnight stays. Closer to the hustle and bustle of downtown or farther away, for those who want to take resting seriously. The choice is yours. Enjoy your visit to Braga.
