Frequent questions about renting a car with Guerin
As with other car rental companies, there are some basic rules to rent a car at Guerin.
There are various services offered with your rental, from tolls to other extras, which should be communicated when picking up your car. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
The minimum age for driving a Guerin vehicle is 21 years, except for vehicles of groups G, H, L, N and O, in which the minimum age is 25 years. All drivers with a driving license for more than 1 year but under the age of 21 can drive a Guerin vehicle for an additional fee. The "Young Driver Fee" applies only to the MINI, C, P, E, E1, J and J1 groups. Read more here.
Can the rented car be driven by someone other than the owner?
No, on any reservation, only the person named in the rental agreement may drive the vehicle. However, if you want to include another driver, you can request the inclusion of an additional driver at the beginning of the rental. The presence of this driver at the location to present the required documents is mandatory. This service will have an additional cost of €9 per day (maximum of €180 per rental agreement).
Can you use the car outside Portugal?
Guerin vehicles may be driven in any of the countries of the European Community and Switzerland but must be returned to a Guerin station in mainland Portugal. Guerin vehicles are not allowed to travel in Eastern European countries (except Slovenia and Slovakia) and / or Africa, as well as others included on the green card.
If you need to travel abroad without acceptance of the Top Assistance product, in the event of an accident or malfunction, the driver will be penalized up € 500 for the towing service to the closest Guerin rental location. The same coverage accepted at the beginning of the rental remains in force.
How to pay tolls or ex-SCUT's with a rented car?
Guerin vehicles are equipped with a Via Verde device and the Toll Service can be signed up for by the client at the beginning of the contract. This service costs € 1.85 per day and up to a maximum of € 18.50 per rental contract (even if it lasts 30 days).
By not subscribing to such service, you will not be able to use the "Via Verde” features, and the payment of tolls is your responsibility.
In this situation you should follow the payment procedures recommended by "Via Verde", namely:
- In the case of tolls with Toll Chargers, take the ticket at the start and pay the tolls at the end upon presentation of the ticket.
- In the case of tolls with gantries – you should visit an office of the CTT to make the payment, two working days after passage and having 5 days to proceed with payment. If toll amounts are not available for payment, CTT stations have a "Declaration of Presence" that should be requested for a possible complaint to the concessionaire.
You can also use the websites www.pagamentodeportages.pt and www.ctt.pt/financas-e-pagamentos/portagens/portagens-em-divida. In both cases, it should be verified that all tickets relate to the period of use of the car and no values should be settled in relation to other agreements, otherwise it will not be possible to reimburse the amount paid.
