Madeira Flower Festival: the perfect excuse to visit the island in spring.

Share
In spring, Madeira does not simply bloom. It bursts. It bursts into petals, colours, music, floral dresses and streets that look as if they have been hand-painted.

The Madeira Flower Festival is one of the most beautiful and iconic events in the regional calendar and one of the main reasons thousands of visitors travel to the island every year. For several weeks, Funchal transforms into a living garden, where tradition, creativity and nature blend into an atmosphere that is hard to forget.

In 2026, the event returns with new features and an enhanced programme, including, for the first time, two allegorical parades.

If you are thinking about visiting the island at this time, get ready: you will need plenty of space on your phone for photos and the kind of mobility offered by Guerin to make sure you do not miss a single moment of Madeiran culture.

When does the Madeira Flower Festival take place in 2026?

Traditionally, the flower festival takes place between late April and May. In 2026, the event runs from 30th April to 31st May, officially marking the arrival of spring on the island.

Throughout these weeks, Funchal hosts floral exhibitions, concerts, street entertainment and themed markets, creating a festive atmosphere that brings together residents and visitors.

What is the Madeira Flower Festival?

The Madeira Flower Festival celebrates the arrival of spring and the island’s extraordinary floral richness, internationally known for its gardens and mild climate.

Officially created in 1979, the initiative was designed to highlight Madeira’s natural heritage. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the region’s most recognised cultural events, combining tradition, floral art, music, fashion and Madeiran identity.

Thus, for several weeks, Funchal embraces a festive atmosphere. Many visitors take advantage of the celebrations to explore the rest of the island before or after the main events. In fact, if you truly want to make the most of your trip, it is worth taking a look at the guide to tourism in Madeira to discover more suggestions.

What you shouldn't miss this year

The 2026 edition of the Madeira Flower Festival features a diverse programme, with events spread across several weeks.

Wall of Hope - 2nd May.

On the morning of 2nd May, at Praça do Município, one of the festival’s most symbolic moments takes place: the Wall of Hope. Children, accompanied by their families, place a flower on a collectively built wall, in a gesture that represents a message of peace and unity.

Flower Allegorical Parade - 3rd and 17th May.

The highlight of the Madeira Flower Festival is the Flower Allegorical Parade, which in 2026 will take place on two dates: 3rd and 17th May. For the first time, two parades will be held to accommodate growing public interest and better distribute attendance.

Hundreds of participants parade through the streets of central Funchal wearing richly decorated floral costumes, alongside floats carefully designed with thousands of flowers. Music, choreography and vibrant colours transform the parade into a unique sensory spectacle.
Tickets are required for the parades, so booking in advance is recommended.

Flower Exhibition - 30th April to 24th May.

At Largo da Restauração, the Flower Pavilion hosts the Flower Exhibition from 30th April to 24th May. This tradition dates back to the floral exhibitions of the 1950s.
Here, visitors can admire some of the finest flowers grown in Madeira, evaluated by a specialised jury. It is the perfect place to understand the diversity and quality of Madeiran floral production.

Flower and Regional Products Market - 30th April to 24th May.

At the central area of Avenida Arriaga, the market brings together floral species, decorative items and regional flavours. In addition to flowers, visitors can taste traditional delicacies and beverages in an environment that combines authenticity, tradition and lively entertainment.

Other traditions and initiatives.

Throughout the month, the programme also includes floral carpets displayed around central Funchal, themed concerts, performances by cultural groups, fashion shows inspired by flowers, exhibitions and classic car gatherings.
These initiatives complement the main events and extend the festive atmosphere beyond the key dates.

Make the most of the Madeira Flower Festival to explore the island.

Madeira is much more than Funchal. Viewpoints, hiking trails, beaches, levadas and natural areas are spread across the island, many of them located away from the city centre.
During the Madeira Flower Festival, between a parade and a concert, you can explore highlights such as:
  • Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe.
  • Pico do Areeiro, ideal for mountain views.
  • Santana, known for its traditional houses.
  • Inland trails and levadas.
