Festivals and Pilgrimages. Unique Traditions in Portugal.
Share
Portugal is a country of living traditions, where each town and village proudly celebrates its festive calendar with devotion, pride and plenty of excitement. In 2025, summer once again becomes the stage for Portugal’s most iconic festivals and pilgrimages — from ancient religious processions to popular fairs filled with music, gastronomy and culture.
Many of these events take place far from major urban centres, in places where tradition is experienced with real intensity and authenticity. By choosing one of our car rental, you can escape the ordinary. Venture along scenic back roads and discover the true heart of the country. And the best part? Do it at your own pace, with complete freedom and flexibility.
Festivals and pilgrimages in the north
São Bartolomeu do Mar Pilgrimage – Esposende
24 August
Famous for the "holy baths”, where children are dipped in the sea for divine protection, this festival combines religious rituals, folklore and a vibrant pilgrimage atmosphere. An excellent opportunity to choose Guerin and set off to explore the northern coast of Portugal.
Nossa Senhora dos Remédios – Lamego
29 August – 9 September
One of the largest and most spectacular pilgrimages in the country, drawing crowds to Lamego. The grand staircase of 686 steps becomes a colourful stage of faith, music and festivities. An unmissable stop on a Douro Valley itinerary with Guerin.
Nossa Senhora da Peneda – Arcos de Valdevez
1–8 September
Set in the idyllic landscape of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, this centuries-old pilgrimage draws thousands of visitors and worshippers every year. It’s one of the most genuine expressions of popular faith, with processions, traditional music and a regional market. Perfect for a cultural road trip through the Gerês region.

In the centre of Portugal
São Mateus Fair – Viseu
8 August – 15 September
The oldest free fair on the Iberian Peninsula continues to evolve year after year. In 2025, expect a packed programme of music, crafts and local cuisine. Running for over a month, it’s easy to include it in any road trip through Central Portugal.
Fairs, Festivals and Pilgrimages in the South of Portugal
Nossa Senhora da Saúde Festival – Évora
15 August
Part of Évora’s city celebrations, this pilgrimage combines religious tradition with concerts, fairs and exhibitions. A perfect excuse to rent a car from one of our car rental stations and explore the depths of the Alentejo – freely and at your own pace.
São Lourenço Fair – Portalegre
9–11 August
More than a popular fair, it’s a celebration of Alentejo identity. With regional delicacies, music and local products, it’s the ideal time to experience one of the country’s lesser-known — but most authentic — regions.

Not to be missed in the Islands
Senhora do Monte Pilgrimage – Funchal, Madeira
14–15 August
Madeira’s main religious festival brings together faith, traditional festivities and community spirit. The Monte area becomes a lively hub where locals and visitors come together. With a car rental in Funchal, you’ll have the freedom to explore the island and reach hidden gems off the tourist trail.
