Family holiday in Azores: an amazing destination for travelling with kids

Share
A family holiday in the Azores is an excellent option for those looking for a unique destination to spend some time with their children. With volcanic landscapes, beaches, crater lakes, natural swimming pools and activities for all ages, the Azores offer unique experiences in a peaceful and safe environment.

Made up of nine islands, the Azores have an incredible variety of landscapes. Each island offers children the chance to explore nature, learn about it and have fun outdoors, while parents can enjoy a relaxing family getaway.

As the main attractions on each island are spread across different locations, renting a car is the best way to explore the Azores at your own pace. When travelling with children, having the flexibility to stop whenever needed, adjust your itineraries and discover hidden spots away from the most central areas makes all the difference.

Which are the best islands for a family holiday in the Azores?

The Azores offer much more than beautiful beaches. Each of the nine islands has its own character and offers very different activities, but some stand out for their family-friendly attractions and wide range of activities for children.

Here are some of the best islands to visit during a family holiday in the Azores. The right choice will depend on your family’s interests and the type of holiday you are looking for.

São Miguel: the most complete island for a family holiday in the Azores

São Miguel is not only the largest and most popular island in the Azores, but also the one that offers the widest variety of family-friendly experiences. Suitable for kids of all ages, it combines several outdoor activities with a wide range of restaurants and accommodation options.

In this island you’ll find some of the Azores’ most iconic attractions, including Lagoa das Sete Cidades, one of its most famous landscapes, Furnas, known for its geothermal activity, thermal pools, and the traditional dish "Cozido das Furnas”, and Terra Nostra Park, where you can bathe in thermal waters heated at around 40ºC and explore one of the world’s finest botanical gardens.

Terceira: the perfect blend of nature, history and adventures

Even though we told you that São Miguel is the most complete island for families, Terceira stands out for its combination of nature, cultural heritage and outdoor activities, making it an excellent choice for a varied family holiday in the Azores.

The colourful buildings, the historic centre of Angra do Heroísmo and the traditional "Impérios de Espírito Santo” scattered across the island are fascinating for both adults and children, inviting families to wander through the streets of the island.

For something completely different, visit the volcanic caves, such as "Algar do Carvão”, where children can learn more about how the islands were formed. Terceira also offers beautiful beaches, natural parks and scenic walking trails that are perfect for family adventures.

Faial and Pico: perfect for adventurous families

Faial and Pico are home to some of the best outdoor adventures in the Azores. As these two islands are only a 30-minute boat trip away, it’s well worth visiting both during the same trip.

On Faial, nature takes centre stage. A visit to "Vulcão dos Capelinhos” is ideal for curious children, offering fantastic views over the volcanic landscape. Birdwatching is another enjoyable activity for families with children.

Pico has much more to offer than climbing Portugal’s highest mountain. Considered one of Europe’s best destinations for whale and dolphin watching, it is a must-visit during your family holiday in the Azores. Spotting whales and dolphins in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience for both children and adults.

Family holiday in the Azores: 4-day itineraries

To make the most of each island, it’s worth planning your itinerary in advance. As many attractions are spread across different parts of the islands, renting a car is the easiest way to travel comfortably and enjoy everything we suggest in these itineraries.

When is the best time for a family holiday in the Azores?

Summer is unarguably the best time of the year for a family holiday in the Azores, although other seasons can also be an option.

During July and August, the days are longer, and the weather is generally more stable, making it the ideal time for boat trips, snorkeling, whale watching and beach days. Spring, from May to June, is another excellent option. The islands are greener than ever, flowers are in full bloom, and temperatures are nice. It’s also a quieter time to visit the Azores, allowing families to explore at a more relaxed pace.

If you’re considering a family holiday in the Azores during autumn, bear in mind that the weather becomes less predictable. Rain, wind and fog are more common, which can affect outdoor activities and reduce visibility at some of the islands’ most spectacular viewpoints.

Whatever time of year you choose, it’s a good idea to pack comfortable clothing, waterproof footwear and a light rain jacket, as weather conditions can change quickly. It’s also worth checking the forecast before booking boat trips or other outdoor experiences.

Explore the Azores at your family’s own pace
