Car trip in Portugal: why are they worth it?

When comparing Portugal with other countries in Europe, it is quite a small country. There is even the possibility of covering Portugal from north to south in a single car trip, depending on the days you have reserved for this roadtrip.

This can be an immersive trip where each destination can have different landscapes. Sea, river, city or village, the choice is yours. If it is already impossible to resist the scenic charms, it is even more challenging to resist the Portuguese gastronomy. Car trip in Portugal: best cities to visit

To get to know as many places as possible, it is essential to define the key stops on your road trip.  Thus, organizing a detailed itinerary for the more perfectionists or establishing only the mandatory stops for those who like more fluid trips, is indispensable.
Although Lisbon and Porto are the most touristic cities that should be in the itinerary, we will suggest other options, not so obvious, but that deserve the same recognition.

Braga

One of the oldest cities in Portugal, which has more and more to offer to young people, is Braga. And when talking about must-see monuments, the Sé Cathedral is one of them. After all, it is the oldest in the country, built in the 12th century. The entire historical center of this city must be explored, just like the steps of the Santuário do Bom Jesus and the Santuário Nossa Senhora do Sameiro.

Guimarães

Guimarães, which saw the birth of Portugal, has many stories to discover. Each monument, each building, has something to tell. The Castle of Guimarães or the Paço dos Duques de Bragança are attractions that should be at the top of the list. This, not forgetting the Largo da Oliveira, Rua de Santa Catarina and the famous muralha de Guimarães.

Aveiro

The colorful canals, where the so typical "moliceiros" circulate, make this city the Portuguese Venice. The "ovos moles", which are the delight of those who pass through there, are also the reason for their return. But there's more: besides the indispensable visit to the haystacks of Costa Nova, the Aveiro Museum and the Museum of New Art also have a lot of knowledge and culture to share.

Serra da Estrela

Beautiful in summer, but even more enchanting in winter. A breathtaking landscape in any season. In Serra da Estrela you can choose, in the hot season, to go trekking following the course of the biggest rivers in Portugal or, when it gets colder, you can enjoy the various types of winter sports that are practiced there.

Coimbra

Coimbra is in the heart of Portugal. And also in the heart of all the students that pass through there. A reference in Portugal and beyond, the University of Coimbra is one of the oldest in the world. Getting to know it is a must when visiting the city. Equally unmissable is Quinta das Lágrimas, which will bring to mind the love story of Pedro and Inês.

Nazaré

Known for its giant waves and international surf competitions, Nazaré beach is an essential stopping point. To really get to know the place and the people, the municipal market is the perfect place. Use the funicular to go from the town center to Sítio. Yes, Sítio is the name of the highest point in the village. It will be worth the wait to get there.

Faro

Last but not least, we recommend a visit to the cultural and historical cradle of the Algarve: Faro. The passage through here cannot end without first visiting some of the most important touristic points. Among them, the Municipal Museum of Faro, the Arco do Repouso and the Walls of Faro.
