Serra da Estrela in summer: pleasantly cool and perfect for adventure

While other parts of the country swelter in high summer temperatures, Serra da Estrela offers welcome freshness. Higher altitudes bring gentle breezes and pleasantly cool nights – ideal if you’re looking for a nature break without the searing heat. Getting there is easy and comfortable. Simply hire a car in Portugal – we recommend an SUV or a four-wheel drive. Switch on the air conditioning and head up the mountain via quieter, scenic back roads without any hassle.

Serra da Estrela in summer: trails and landscapes for every taste

If you’re fond of walking or road trips with scenic stops, you’ll be spoilt for choice with Serra’s trails. Highlights include:
  • Trilho das Faias (Manteigas): a circular route of around 6 km, moderate in difficulty. Mostly shaded, it offers a refreshing atmosphere that keeps you going. Along the way you’ll pass small streams and enjoy panoramic views over the Zêzere Glacier Valley.
  • Zêzere Glacier Valley: stretching for about 13 km, this is one of Europe’s largest glacial valleys. A riverside trail dotted with picnic areas, it offers a medium-level walk with both flat and gently sloping sections, rewarded with breathtaking views.
  • Torre da Serra da Estrela: at 1,993 metres, it’s the highest point in mainland Portugal. You can drive right up, but there are also walking routes for those who prefer to be immersed in nature. Paths start from Lagoa Comprida and Covão d’Ametade. At the summit, viewpoints reveal sweeping vistas over the mountain range and the Serra da Lousã.
The great thing about travelling by car? You can plan your own route and take in several trails in a single day.

Lagoons and river beaches: the mountain’s watery side

Yes, you can go for a swim in Serra da Estrela. Here’s where:
  • Lagoa Comprida and Lagoa do Vale do Rossim: Lagoa Comprida is the largest lagoon in the mountains and ideal for a stroll. Vale do Rossim, with its crystal-clear waters, is perfect for picnics and sunbathing. Both are easily accessible by car with parking nearby.
  • Loriga River Beach: often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, this spot is framed by granite rocks and fed by pure mountain water. It holds a Blue Flag award and is lifeguarded during the bathing season, ensuring a safe welcome.
  • Unhais da Serra River Beach: fully equipped for families, with lawned areas, natural shade and a play area. It’s also a starting point for fun walks and mountain activities – the perfect place for a full day in the fresh air.

Mountain villages: timeless authenticity

Exploring by car means you can visit villages where time seems to stand still. Don’t miss Linhares da Beira, with its imposing castle and granite lanes – considered the highest village in Portugal. Soak up the views and absolute tranquillity – all you need to do is hire a car and set off.

Where to eat: mountain flavours, even in summer

In Serra da Estrela, the food is worth seeking out, even on warm days. We recommend:
  • Varanda da Estrela (Manteigas): traditional mountain cuisine featuring game dishes, roast kid goat and hearty stews. The view over the Zêzere Glacier Valley is perfect for a sunset dinner.
  • O Albertino (Folgosinho): famous for its generous set menu, starting with local cheeses and cured meats, followed by specialities such as wild boar with beans and rabbit rice.
  • Museu do Pão Restaurant (Seia): a culinary and cultural experience in one. This Bread Museum celebrates traditional Portuguese bread and offers a menu that goes far beyond it – from starters and main courses to unique desserts.

Where to stay: from comfort to rustic charm

The region offers a variety of accommodation to suit a road trip:
  • Casa das Penhas Douradas (Manteigas): rural retreat with a heated pool, sauna, and breakfast featuring fresh local produce.
  • Hotel Berne (Manteigas): family-run with panoramic rooms, a regional cuisine restaurant and mountain activity packages.
  • Abrigo da Montanha (Seia): modern style with an indoor pool and mountain views – a great base for exploring the area.
  • Luna Hotel Serra da Estrela (Covilhã): ideal for those after comfort and proximity to ski slopes, complete with a spa and restaurant.
