Portugal itinerary: an adventure in electric vehicles

Share
After gathering the main ingredients for an ideal trip, we have compiled a list of the best places to visit in this Portugal itinerary. Take the wheel and get charged up to drive an electric vehicle on this adventure.

Year after year, Portugal has seen a significant rise in the number of international tourists, making it a popular holiday destination in Europe. It's not hard to see why. With an average of 12 hours of sunshine per day during summer, stunning landscapes that satisfy even the most discerning travellers, and a coastline stretching 2,500 km, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Discover Portugal behind the wheel of electric vehicles

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in both urban and rural areas, as demonstrated by the growing number of EV charging stations across the country. So, we decided to encourage Guerin customers to rent electric vehicles for their travel through our guide, as we believe it is a worthwhile ecological initiative. The North of Portugal: a preserved identity

"The North" of Portugal is a must-visit destination for anyone planning a trip to the country. This region is home to many quaint villages, where you can still experience centuries-old traditions and friendly locals. One of the best ways to explore the North is by car, as you can take your time and enjoy the unique gastronomy on offer. Don't miss out on this unforgettable journey!

We embarked on our adventure at the Guerin station in Porto, driving one of our electric vehicles. After charging the batteries, we felt energized and began our journey towards Praia da Apúlia, in Esposende. The windmills provided a beautiful background as we drove with the sea in sight. We stopped to record our first memorable moment of the trip.

We cross the beautiful bridge at Fão and continue our journey towards Viana do Castelo. Along the way, you can rely on the support of several EV charging stations. Once you cross the Eiffel Bridge, you will be greeted by the hill of Santa Luzia, which offers the most stunning view of the city. The heart of the city is filled with a series of emblazoned palaces and striking squares, adorned with historic fountains, waiting for you to explore.

As we make our way inland towards Montalegre, we encounter the town of Trás-os-Montes which is home to an impressive castle that is surrounded by granite streets. Despite being a peaceful town, it attracts crowds every Friday the 13th to celebrate witches. While this part of Portugal does not have many fast-charging stations, it won't affect your journey through the north. Eco-mobility is not yet widespread in this region.

The city of Chaves is located nearby, so if you opt for one of our electric vehicles will have all the support it needs to recharge. While it's charging, we can enjoy the different gastronomic flavours of Trás-os-Montes. We can walk through the city's narrow streets, Pastel de Chaves in hand, and visit the Torre de Menagem, the largest Roman baths on the Iberian Peninsula, as well as the oldest Roman bridge in the country.

As we move forward towards Bragança, we visit many castles along the way. Our final stop is the most iconic landmark of the city. After recharging our batteries, we continue our journey towards Vila Flor. Even though it is often neglected by tourists, this charming town is full of history, traditions, and monuments, making it a great place for exploring its beautiful streets.

Centre - the heart of our Portugal itinerary

The Portugal Itinerary has selected some of the destinations from the culturally diverse region that we believe are worth a visit.
We have just left Lamego where we were recharged by the serene atmosphere of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Our next stop is Viseu, in the heart of Portugal, where we plan to visit the Cathedral and the Grão Vasco Museum. Although we have already covered half of our journey, there are still plenty of beautiful sights to explore with our electric vehicle.

We are making our way towards mainland Portugal's highest mountain range and have planned to take a break in the city of Guarda to indulge in some delicious food. The city has shown commitment towards the future of mobility and has several EV charging stations, making it possible to rent an electric vehicle just like any other car in the area.

As we journey across the country, we make an obligatory stop in Covilhã, also known as the "Snow City", a name immortalised by the fado singer Amália. Covilhã hosts an annual urban art festival called the WOOL Festival, which aims to rehabilitate several old buildings in the heart of the town.

Our next stop is the "City of Students", Coimbra. We will begin our journey at Quinta das Lágrimas, the place that brings to life one of the most beautiful national legends. Later, we will visit the "Portugal dos Pequenitos" park and experience the nostalgia of childhood. Finally, we'll explore the unique University of Coimbra.

We are saying goodbye to the central region of Portugal, as we leave the city of Abrantes behind. The River Tagus lies ahead of us, with the Iron Bridge still in use for train crossings. We can choose to enjoy a stunning sunset either by the riverside or near the nearby Almourol Castle.

South - where our Portugal Itinerary ends

We decided to combine the best of Alentejo and Algarve to end our tour of Portugal with an electric car. Leaving Lisbon, we headed towards the beautiful town of Montemor-o-Novo and explored the historic streets that led us to the castle. From the castle, we enjoyed the stunning views of Alentejo. The region of Alentejo is rich in history and tradition, and it shares borders with Évora. This city boasts some of the most captivating monuments in the country, such as the Temple of Diana and the Silver Water Aqueduct.

Both the Alentejo and Algarve regions have a good number of EV charging stations. This is especially useful if you want to avoid the crowds that usually come during the summer months. We drove down to Reguengos de Monsaraz to take a dip in the Alqueva and recharge our car batteries before continuing to the Algarve. The most popular vacation spot on the continent has a wide range of entertainment and dining options. Additionally, the region is known for its consistently pleasant weather, making it the ideal destination for relaxation. While exploring the southern region, we decided to commence our journey from Vila Real de Santo António, from where we can easily reach Ayamonte, in Spain, by boat or car for some shopping.

Next, we headed to Tavira for a brief visit to the city, characterized by its white-painted streets that invite you to linger. Our next stop was Olhão, which is situated next to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Here, we took a boat tour to discover the best flavours of the Algarve. We've decided to end our Portugal Itinerary in Silves, a beautiful city in Portugal known for its Islamic-influenced castle.
